Rafflesia: The stinkiest Parasitic Queen

Rafflesia is like a woman who may not be the type of woman that the society wants, but is a queen of its own. Good afternoon everyone and please bear with me for several minutes as I read my speech.

It is normal for us, human beings, that if we smell bad people tend to get away from us.  Worst, we will be an outcast.

However, among Rafflesia’s, the case is different.

But what is Rafflesias? Rafflesia is a plant that grows in Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Philippines. It is unique because it doesnt have leaves, nor roots, nor stems but only have just like in the picture.  This means they cannot make their own food. But how do they survive…. They are parasites. They suck water and nutrients from a vine called Tetrastigma, which they could not live. However, although they may be queen of free-riders, they are colorful and lovely. One species has flowers reaching 1.5 meters which is the world’s largest so far.

Now, let’s get to know them more. Since the flower is its only distinguishable feature, let us examine the parts. They have warts, the perigone tube, the ramenta, the anther, coronal ring of disk, bracts, disk, column, processes, window, diaphragm and perigone lobe. These parts differ in numbers, sizes and shapes among species.

All flowering plants are pollinated. And who does the job for Rafflesia’s? It’s the carrion flies; those common flies you see on any dead and decomposing remains. And that’s where being stinky becomes an asset. The smellier they get, the more chances they can propagate their kind. Whenever the flower emits their signature-putrid smell-the flies arrive and spread their pollen.

But the flowers bloom only seasonally. Like human pregnancy, it might take nine more months since its last flowering- before a new set of flowers will re-emerge. And each blossom only a week with up to 20% of the flowers dying immediately.

Interestingly, Rafflesia has become a popular media character. In the video game, Final Fantasy XII, Rafflesia is a boss in Feywood. The Rafflesia sucks away the party's main player at a monstrous rate, and can also inflict Sap.  One way to defeat it, is having a character nearby who can cure any infected.

In One Piece, an anime, a monster Rafflesia sneaks into the boat where it emits a very foul-smell. However, it is killed by men inside the boat.

In the more popular, Pokemon movie, the Character “Vileplume” is actually a poison discharging Rafflesia plant. It can emit fire, ice, can fly and do psychic moves but its strongest weapon is Acid and Solar Beam.  In the movie, the Vileplume's pollen triggers atrocious allergy attacks in humans and is toxic to other Pokemon.

Globally, scientist know of at least 27 species of Rafflesia. In the Philippines, we have eleven species or 41 percent of the world’s Rafflesia diversity. Said in a different way, 4 out of every 10 Rafflesia species you would see is a Filipino Rafflesia. Thus, our country can be branded as a Rafflesia Republic.

Mindanao Island also has a good share of Rafflesia diversity. Did you know that the largest Rafflesia in the Philippines is found in Mindanao?

It is called Rafflesia schadenbergania, after the naturalist Alexander Shadenberg who first discovered the species at the foothills of Mt Apo in 1882. With a flower of nearly a meter, it is close to the size 7 year old kid when sitted. On Mindanao, the species has been seen in Davao del Sur, South Cotabato and Mt Kitanglad in Bukidnon.

Rafflesia mira

Second, Rafflesia mira and Rafflesia magnifica are two names for a single species. Both were discovered at Mt Candalaga in Maragusan, Compostela Valley.

Rafflesia magnifica
The two forms differ in size measurements in which the scientific description of Magnifica came from measurements of flowers in full bloom while that of Mira was from photographs of nearly dead samples. The medium-sized Mira and Magnifica flowers measure about half a meter and they have round or elliptic perigone wart

The third species on Mindanao is the Rafflesia mixta which is found so far only in the town of Mainit, Surigao del Norte. It shows a combination of three features of Philippine Rafflesia namely (i) the shape and size of the conical process in Rafflesia schadenbergania;(ii) the floral size and sparsely distributed perigone warts of R. speciosa; and the (iii) overall resemblance, floral size, faint scent, diaphragm and ramenta morphology of R. mira

Fourth, is Rafflesia verrucosa which is found only in Mt. Kampalili in Davao Oriental Province.  It is derived from the Latin verruca or wart which exhibits a unique appearance. It is the first small-flowered Rafflesia because it measures only ¼ of the size of other species

However, with each discovery of a new Rafflesia species comes the influx of tourist and tourism facilities. Without a clear conservation plan, the species is threatened.

This should not be the case, and I recommend the following; First, there should be management zoning strategies for protected areas where Rafflesia species are found. Consultations with the local communities and organizations such as the DENR, local governments, Department of Tourism (DOT), the academic communities, and scientists should be done before opening these Rafflesia sites to the public.

Areas that are close to people should be managed for education and ecotourism purposes while those that are far from human habitation should be preserved and scientifically studied. Second, further research should be done to know the conservation status of the lowland where most species are most likely to found

I do hope that someday Rafflesia will become the happiest flower when people value her as God’s amazing creation worthy of preservation.

Repaint of eyeglass

I have been wearing an eyeglass for almost a decade. As a result, the metals of the frame exhibit rust. There was one time that my friend told me that I had to change my eyeglass because it was shameful. Hahhaa.. However, this eyeglass of mine has this so called sentimental value. In fact, I would be worried if I left my eyeglass in another place because I use this in reading books or other materials that increases my imagination.

Going back to the story, I went to different optical clinics wherein it would offer me to repaint my eyeglass. Among those clinics, only the EO Optical located at NCCC Mall Davao gave me the happiness in my heart. The technician just offered me P150.00 for a white repaint of its metal. Now, I can wear my eyeglass thinking that it is a new one.

Love stories

One of my hobbies is reading love stories. Every time that I have to go book shops, I always pass in pocketbooks sections. Sometimes, I will just ask permission from my companions to give me extra time so that I can choose and buy pocketbooks.

Why I am a sucker of pocketbooks? Maybe because I am always dreaming of a perfect love story which never happens in reality. Nowadays, most Filipino men are irresponsible and womanizer. They are just good in playing video games or musical instruments.

Thus, when I finish reading a good love story, it gives me a smile for the rest of the day.

The Cliff walk

I finished one of the books that I read today. This book told me the story of the author who belong to a middle class family in America. He was a professor in English, married with three children and currently his wife was pregnant when he received his pink slip. It was really a great blow to him because as a father, he was expected to provide the needs of his family. Unfortunately, due to the economic recession in America, he couldnt find any job which was the same with the previous one. As a result, he was depressed and his confidence hit the bottom. The story ended when he became a construction worker yet he was happy of it because he found the grace and dignity of that job.

When I finished this book, I began to relate it to the plight of workers in the Philippines. According to the new statistics there were 13.8 million people who are jobless. Today, some college graduates cannot find a job. I really wonder if the K+12 education system is applicable nowadays. Majority of the parents send their children to school to study so that someday they can find a job to support their living. But with this situation, is it important to extend the number of years just to study in a school?

I hope that our government made a good decision with this law.

A simple deed

I really had a bad week today. Aside from running in a taxi just to see the face of my longtime crush (hahaha!!), the sandal that my sister gave to me got broken. When I was about to ride in a jeepney, I felt something odd in my feet. There, I realized that the strap of my sandal was ripped. I just told the driver nicely to pull over the jeepney because I forgot something. When I removed my sandal to examine the strap, I could feel the hotness of the cemented road because it was already 12 noon. I havent been a stagy but it was really shameful to walk bare feet at Matina, one of the busiest road here in Davao. There I just asked the owner of the newspaper stand to let me borrow his slippers so that I could get another sandal at my boarding house. Since he has been my friend, he let me borrow his slipper without any doubt.

I just realize that a simple deed can be a great help to others.

Starbucks in Davao

When I am inside a mall like SM davao, I use to eat a lot of foods. I really love eating especially if the food looks good. However, this kind of practice would lead me to stomach ache.Hahaha..

Thanks to God, there is a newly opened Starbucks in SM Davao and Abreeza Mall that can help me in this kind of problem. Starbucks is a kind of restaurant that is offering coffee and some desserts. Coffee is a good laxative which means it causes one's stomach to exhibit wave-like movements which helps in emptying them. Thus, it can help us when we are constipated.

When my friend and I visited that place, the ambiance was really good. Sometimes, I wonder what makes a restaurant really have those kinds of atmosphere. Moreover, you could find people who have an average and above-average income dining in that restaurant. When I was young, I was not entering those kinds of places. Because of this I thought that price of one commodity would range from P300 to P500. But I was really shocked because the food ranged as cheap as P95 to P275. The waiters and waitress are also friendly and accommodating.

Madarin tea garden

My friend and I used to dine a lot of restaurants such as Mandarin Tea Garden. Well, I am not an avid fan of Chinese cuisine nowadays because of the recent escalation in Scarborough shoal. I think the incident is an insult to Philippine sovereignty.

However, my friend has a Chinese blood and he loves to eat noodles so we went in that Chinese restaurant. I was really shocked because there was a change in the physical appearance of the menu.Furthermore, the prices became more expensive than the old one. Before, I would feel satisfied if I ate P32 of siopao. But now, that kind of food was abolished replacing a much smaller siopao with a cheaper price. I also ordered chicken mami because I already tasted all the noodles in the menu but I felt gross when I ate it. As usual, I felt like vomiting inside the mall. I realized that siomai and ravioli were the most important ingredients of noodles soup.

Friday the 13th

Thirteen is consider as unlucky number by many people especially when it falls on Friday. It is often called Friday the 13th. According to some Christians, Judas, the one who betrayed Jesus, sat on the thirteenth table. Because of this, many people are not allowed to travel, propose or even open a business. The effects can either be accidents or failures.

However, a good news happened yesterday. The rocket launched by the North Korea headed by it's leader was crashed after one minute of take off. This was a good news for the Filipinos because there were many speculations that the second part of the rocket would fall into the Philippines.

Maybe, prayers of my countrymen were answered.
